Like so many others, I found myself with a lot of spare time during the COVID lockdown. What started as a casual hobby quickly spiralled out of control, and before I knew it, my tiny flat was bursting at the seams with homemade candles. I figured, why not share them with the world? So, I nervously set up my Etsy shop, with zero expectations and even less knowledge of how Etsy worked.

I still remember my very first order—it came through, and I just stared at it, absolutely baffled. Then I rushed around like a madwoman, packing it up and handwriting the address with shaky excitement. Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing on the shop front, but at least I knew my candles were good. 😂

My candle-making journey started because of a TikTok (as all great ideas do these days). I tried melting the leftover bits of old candles to make a new one, but the result was a sunken, scentless mess. That’s when I fell headfirst into the world of candle-making. I became obsessed, learning everything about melting points, scent throws, and the magic of soy wax. After countless trial-and-error attempts (and a few fire hazards along the way), I finally perfected my own recipe. Every candle I make now feels like my little baby.

The name Kloak Candles has its own quirky origin. During lockdown, a broken clock sat on my floor for six months (yes, really), and one day I just started word-playing with the name. I landed on “Kloak” as a cheeky nod to candles’ ability to cloak bad smells—though now I think my candles do way more than that.

So, what makes my candles different? For one, I use soy wax instead of paraffin wax. Soy burns cleaner and longer, with a stronger scent throw. But let’s be honest, it’s the labels that steal the show. Whether it’s “Dead Dad Club,” “Itty Bitty Titty Committee,” or “Hot Girls Have IBS,” my candles are made for people who want to laugh, connect, and give gifts with personality. My dream is to build out the collection so there’s something for everyone—though that dream is taking time (and a lot of shredded paper).

Candle-making has been a rollercoaster of late-night crafting sessions, countless supply runs, and spreadsheets for everything from postage boxes to fragrance oils. But it’s also been the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Knowing that over 400 people have my candles in their homes is mind-blowing, and it keeps me motivated to create more.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to bring a little joy into your life. Whether it’s a grin, a laugh, or just the satisfaction of lighting a candle that actually smells amazing, I hope my creations make your day a bit brighter.
